We had a very busy week during this short week! With many discussions about writing, literacy groups and goal setting, students in room 9 realized they needed a visual reminder for letter sounds. Grade 1’s and 2’s used finger painting as a way to represent pictures that matched letter sounds. Grade 2’s focused on long and short vowel sounds while grade 1’s completed the alphabet.
It’s no surprise we love art in our classroom!
Along with creating alphabet art, we spent time to talk about goals. Many students were already aware of daily goals with clear intentions in mind:
“My goal is to not be last to get ready every day” ~grade 2 student
“My goal is to try to eat all my lunch” ~grade 1 student
It is clear that many students understood what making a goal could look like. Next, we discussed strategies or “things i can do to help me reach my goal”
We narrowed the goals to be focused on literacy; reading or writing. Our list includes goals such as:
-knowing 10 new sight words
-using capital letters at the beginning of my sentences
-knowing my long and short vowel sounds
-building my reading stamina
-using juicy words in my writing
Next we discuss appropriate strategies to use:
-practice every day for 10 minutes
-play alphabet games
-practice with an adult
-using a timer
-find a quiet spot to practice my goal
Room 9 agreed that it would be helpful to work on their goals every day for at least 10 minutes and then revisit in a few weeks.
Room 9 & 11 will be sharing their learning every Friday.
