This week, students learned about the contributions of firefighters in our community. They were highly engaged during their field study to the local fire station. Aside from exploring the fire trucks, learning about the fire suit, helmet, mask, tools and gloves, the firefighters were very helpful and informative about how to help children prepare and practice for a house fire.
Students also learned that firefighters are heroes and role models, people we can rely on in bad times. When I asked students what they want to be when they grow up, many of them said “a firefighter.” Firefighters are modern day heroes best known for their willingness to help others. They have true COMPASSION and EMPATHY for others; this trait is one of the essential skills of the 21st century and a skill possessed by some of our finest emergency services providers. We learned that it's important to CARE for others. To promote student reflection and critical thinking, ask your child the following questions this weekend:
What ways do firefighters show care and concern for people and the natural environment?
What actions can we take to work and play with others to create a safe and caring environment?
Room 9 & 11 will be sharing their learning every Friday.
